History follows the basic pattern of the story of Israel, “God’s son”, from the age of the Priests, through the age of the Kings, and then to the Prophets. These are the stages of maturity that nations go through and that individuals go through.
The Trivium follows these Priestly, Kingly and Prophetic stages.
Priests were taught by rules and regulations, & repetition (Grammar stage). Then Israel grew up into the Kingly stage (logic). Here they were to be able to distinguish and make judgments of right and wrong, good and bad. Finally, the Prophet is to discern with wisdom, to create new worlds (poetic) and speak forth, “forth-telling” or proclaiming. This is the rhetoric stage.
